Standing Committees Reports

Annual Report
Committee on Student Recruitment, Advisement, and Retention
2003 - 2004

Chair: Dale Kilhefner

Members: Greg Anderson, Carol Andrews, Justin Lybarger (student member), Catherine MacGowan, Peter Mellen, Joy Reed, Patricia Reese, Michael Snowden, Helen Taggart, Kim West, Susan White

Number of Meetings: 3

Recommendations from previous year and/or current charges: to help develop a campus-wide awareness of the role each administrator, faculty, and staff member plays in the retention and academic success of students.

Accomplishments:

The Committee sponsored a First Friday Faculty Forum on advisement, with Greg Anderson being the featured presenter. The Committee also recommended to Vice President Thompson that it be mandatory for all new faculty members (after this year) to attend an instructional session on advisement.

Recommendations for the next year:

The Committee formed three subcommittees -- one on recruitment, one on advisement, and one on student retention. Unfortunately, it was done too late in the year to show accomplishments in the three specialties. Next year’s Committee is encouraged to consider whether it wants to pursue this course from the beginning of the year, allowing each subcommittee to be more aggressive in pursuing an agenda in its own specialty, but still allowing the entire Committee to meet and act on initiatives proposed by its subcommittees.
