Research and Scholarship Committee Year's End Report 2004-2005

Overall, the committee did good work this year and accomplished much. The committee met three times during the year and communicated frequently via email to coordinate activities. The committee chair is grateful to have served with such great faculty.

1. Research and Scholarship Grants

The entire committee worked to request, review, and evaluate submissions for the Research and Scholarship Grant competition. The committee met (November 4, 2004). After considering our recommendations, Vice President Thompson decided to fund the following awards:

2. 2004 Alumni Award for Distinguished Faculty Service to the Academic Discipline

This faculty service recognition was created in 1971 by the AASU Alumni Association, the Faculty, the Executive Committee, and the Research and Scholarship Committee to recognize outstanding contributions of the faculty to their academic disciplines. The committee nominated Dr. Chris Baker of Languages, Literature, and Philosophy for the 2004 award.

Spring Semester Activities:

1. Student Scholarship Symposium

Steve Taylor and Bob Loyd coordinated the 2005 Student Scholarship Symposium. The exhibition was held on April 19 –April 27. The judging session was held on Friday, April 22 and the luncheon awards ceremony was held Wednesday, April 27.

  • The Effects of Fuel Efficiency Standards on the Automobile Fatality Rate, by Sarah Beth Link (Advisor: Mike Toma).
  • Investigation the Source of Fecal Contamination Along the Ogeechee River, by Eva Whitehead and Tonya Collier (Advisor: Judy Awong-Taylor and Jennifer Zettler).
  • Elelmentary Physical Education and Health Teaching Methodology, by Sarah Micheel (Advsior: Ginny Knorr).
  • Embryology and Egg Falure in the Loggerhead Sea Turtle on the Georgia Coast, by Laura Cheyenne Nevada and Matthew Richardson (Advisor: Kathryn Craven)
  • Microbial Characterization of Unhatched Loggerhead Sea Turtle Eggs and its Implication in Embryonic Development and Death, by Tanya Collier, Laura Griffiths, and Jennifer Griffen (Advisors: Judy Awong-Taylor and Kathryn Craven)
  • Building Better Web Applications with a Framework, by Janice Stanford (Advisor: Hongjun Su) (Graduate Poster)

2. 2004 Alumni Award for Distinguished Faculty Service to the Academic Discipline

By the time of the extended April 15, 2005 deadline, only one nomination was submitted. Discussion of this lack of submissions will take place at the first fall meeting

3. Excellence in Research and Scholarship Magazine

The Office of Sponsored Programs has collected submissions for the Winter 2006 edition. Over the summer, the edited draft will be sent to University Relations for printing.
