COMMITTEE ON STUDENT CONDUCT
2003-2004 Annual Report

Mission: The mission of the Committee on Student Conduct is to provide the framework for all students to develop and foster within themselves the ideals of honor and integrity in their academic endeavors and of responsible citizenship in their personal actions on and off campus.

Duties: The Committee shall be responsible to the Faculty for (a) recommending policies relating to the Academic Honor Code and the Code of Conduct; (b) formulating and approving rules, enforcement procedures, and sanctions within the framework of existing policies; (c) recommending changes in the Honor Code and Code of Conduct; and (d) interviewing and selecting members for the Student Court. Additionally, the Committee may provide guidance to faculty, staff, and students on the intent and implementation of the Student Codes, and undertake work with the Vice-President for Student Affairs on issues related to student conduct and other appropriate matters as determined by the Vice-President for Student Affairs or his representative.

Meetings and Reporting Mechanisms: The Committee shall physically meet at the beginning of each semester and at other times as required, reporting and making recommendations to the Vice-President for Student Affairs. Additional meetings shall be held as necessary, and may include consultations telephonically and via e-mail in lieu of personal meetings.

Committee Composition: The Committee shall be composed of five faculty members, from whom a chairperson shall be elected at the beginning of each academic year, and the Vice-president for Student Affairs. Four students shall be named to the Committee by the Vice-President for Student Affairs to represent the AASU student body, including the president and vice-president of the Student Government Association.

This Year's Activities:

Mission and Duties: The student conduct committee met twice during the 2003-2004 academic year primarily to discuss current trends, issues, and perceptions of student conduct on and off the AASU campus. Specifically, the committee agenda centered on the following:

  1. Discussion of updated statistics regarding student conduct over the past two years at AASU.
  2. Continued discussion of enforcing the existing Academic Honor Code and Code of Conduct by reminding faculty in each of our departments to include such information in respective syllabi so that students are more aware of these codes and by working on two brochures, Faculty Guide to the Academic Code and Student Guide to the Academic Code, to be finalized during Summer, 2004.
  3. Continue to emphasize the Academic Honor Code and Code of Conduct during all undergraduate and graduate new student orientation sessions.
  4. Plan timeline and to-do list for selection of new student court members during the middle part of Fall Semester 2004. The committee is directly responsible for selection of new student court members.
